Yes checking is normal and often confused with delamination that occurs when the glue bond is not adequate. While checking is not considered to be of
structural significance here are some tips to keep checking to a minimum.
1. Keep timbers wrapped until construction is complete. If the manufacturer’s wrap (or portions of) is removed to inspect or install beams, it should carefully be replaced.
2. Apply a coat of sealer to the ends of all members on receipt at the jobsite and after trimming. The sealer will retard moisture loss from the ends of the beam, minimizing end checks and splits.
3. Protect the timbers from both sun and rain.
Careful adherence to these practices will minimize checking, reduce call-backs, and help to maintain the beautiful appearance of the laminated timbers.
Can structural glue laminated timber (glulam) be used outdoors?
Glulam does not require preservative treatment where it is protected from exposure to rain and snow. For unprotected outdoor exposure the wood used must be heartwood of a naturally durable species or pressure-treated with an approved preservative to insure durability.
When placing bolt, nails, or other fasteners, do I need to be concerned with the location of bond lines?
Adhesives used in structural glue laminated timber (glulam) are engineered to be as strong as the wood which it bonds. They are subject to stringent manufacturing requirements and rigorous qualification testing prior to acceptance for use. Consequently, fasteners such as bolts and nails can be placed without regard to the location or orientation of bond lines.
Can I drill holes or notch my glulams?
There are specific guidelines for drilling holes and cutting notches in glulams. These must be approved by the engineer of record or architect qualified in timber design. The guidelines can be viewed on the American Institute of Timber Construction (AITC) website.
